Coffee With Catherine, 6/28

Hello book bees, new and old! For those of you that are new to the blog, “Coffee With Catherine” is a monthly post that I make on the last Sunday of each month. In this post, I mostly ramble about what’s going on in my life–less about the blogging, and more about revealing the blogger behind it.

This month has been a weird one, and it went by so fast! Normally throughout Pride month, I’d do a lot more. I don’t usually have the opportunity to go to Pride events, and with COVID-19 still very much a threat that trend continued this year. But still, I do usually try to obtain at least one piece of Pride clothing from a queer creator, and this year I simply couldn’t budget for it. I have my eye on a pair of bi pride rose boots from Nerdy Keppie whose products I really enjoy. Maybe next month? Maybe the month after that?

Honestly finances have been weighing heavily on me as of late. My paychecks simply aren’t meant to support two people living in an expensive city. We know that my husbands forms are officially filed for immigration and work permit–we received the charges for them after all–but not even our lawyer has a good estimate on what our processing time is going to look like. The combination of COVID and Trump’s administration have made moving forward at this time incredibly frustrating and terrifying. In the meantime, my paychecks are stretched thinner and thinner by health insurance, and our new utility billing which is about 20 dollars more expensive each month.

On a brighter side, I’ve started writing a lot more than I used to! I submitted a couple of short stories for publication last month, and one of them was selected! (The other I’m still waiting to hear back on.) Pussy Magic featured my short story “Love” in their special Bi Babes Pride Issue, very exciting stuff! I was thinking about submitting a couple of pieces of flash fiction to a contest ending today, but on reflection I don’t think they’re ready and the $20 reading fee is one I can’t pay without really believing in my work.

My husband and I are sleeping better now that we’ve finally gotten our bed, at the beginning of this month! We also got a kitchen table, and though the IKEA assembly took us all day, at least two fights, and hurt my husband’s back I think we’re both glad to have somewhere to sleep and somewhere to eat.

I’ve started to apply for a new job in my field every night, hoping that if I get ahead of the new hiring I might actually get somewhere. Unfortunately, museum and archaeology jobs aren’t exactly a priority during a world pandemic, so there aren’t a lot of opportunities to choose from and I’m not a strong candidate when I can’t find consistent work in my field to boost my resume…

Here’s hoping that July is a better month for us all book bees!
